Russia’s FSB accuses Telegram of enabling extremist groups, escalating legal pressure on the platform and its founder.
Russia’s Federal Security Service charged Telegram founder Pavel Durov with aiding terrorism, alleging the platform hosted channels used for sabotage and cyber fraud. The charges could result in life imprisonment and follow fines exceeding 100 million rubles ($1.25 million) this year.
The investigation, launched in February, has intensified after Russia restricted Telegram’s operations. The FSB claims Ukrainian intelligence and extremist groups used the app to coordinate attacks inside Russia, though no Interpol Red Notice has been requested.
Telegram, a key hub for crypto transactions via The Open Network (TON), faces heightened scrutiny as it expands wallet features and ecosystem tools. The case underscores growing regulatory risks for global tech platforms operating in Russia.
