Peter Lynch managed Fidelity’s Magellan Fund from 1977 to 1990, delivering a 29.2% average annual return and beating the S&P 500 in 11 of 13 years. The fund’s assets grew from $20 million to over $14 billion under his leadership, later peaking at $102 billion in 2000 during the dot-com boom.

At its height, Magellan was the world’s largest mutual fund, though its assets have since declined to $27 billion as ETFs gained prominence. Lynch’s investment philosophy, including the mantra ‘invest in what you know,’ became widely cited among retail investors.

Fidelity now offers an ETF version, the Fidelity Magellan ETF (FMAG), reflecting the shift in investor preferences toward passive strategies.
