Meta plans to enter the cloud computing market by selling excess data center capacity to external customers, mirroring services offered by Amazon’s AWS and Microsoft’s Azure. The move targets developers and businesses seeking AI model hosting and hardware access, potentially competing with specialized providers like CoreWeave.

The company has previously hinted at exploring cloud services but never confirmed active development. CEO Mark Zuckerberg noted in May that external demand for Meta’s compute resources existed, though the company prioritized internal needs until now. The shift aligns with Meta’s strategy to offset heavy AI spending.

Shares rose over 7% following the report, reflecting investor optimism about the new revenue stream. The initiative could position Meta as a key player in the growing AI infrastructure market.
