Major U.S. supermarket chains accelerate downsizing plans, citing market conditions and financial sustainability, affecting over 100 workers.
Kroger and Raley’s will close more than 70 stores combined by 2027, part of broader industry downsizing. Kroger plans to shutter approximately 60 locations by the end of 2026, while Raley’s will close seven stores in California and Nevada.
Raley’s began its downsizing in January 2026, closing stores in Roseville and Antioch, followed by a Nob Hill Foods location in Mountain View on May 29, 2026. The latest closure in Petaluma, set for January 2027, will impact 48 employees. Stop & Shop also confirmed closures in New Jersey for 2026.
Companies cite local market conditions and long-term financial sustainability as reasons for the closures. Raley’s stated it will offer transfer opportunities to affected workers where possible.
