Hyundai Motor is evaluating a major expansion of its Georgia Metaplant, potentially increasing annual production capacity from 500,000 to 700,000-800,000 vehicles by 2028. The move follows a 25% tariff on imported vehicles imposed in April 2025, later reduced to 15% for South Korean cars under a trade deal.

Automakers have faced a choice between paying duties or relocating production, with most opting for incremental shifts. Hyundai’s potential expansion would make its Georgia facility the largest in the U.S. by capacity, surpassing Tesla and Toyota plants.

The company later clarified that the plans remain under consideration and are not finalized. The decision reflects broader industry trends as tariffs reshape manufacturing footprints.
