Honeywell plans to spin off its aerospace division, creating two focused firms amid operational challenges and a premium valuation.

Honeywell International (HON) will separate its aerospace division on June 29, forming two distinct public companies. The move marks the conglomerate’s largest strategic shift in years, aiming to streamline operations into aerospace and industrial automation segments.

The stock has underperformed the S&P 500, rising just 0.3% over the past three months compared to the index’s 11.9% gain. Despite this, Honeywell trades at a premium, with a price-to-earnings ratio of 35.3 versus the S&P 500’s 24.1, reflecting investor bets on future value from the split.

Management describes the spinoff as the ‘final step in our transformation,’ though the transition faces near-term operational headwinds and a $38 billion backlog to manage.
