US regulator orders government-backed mortgage firms to evaluate cryptocurrency volatility and risk-mitigation measures for home loans.
The Federal Housing Finance Agency instructed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to consider cryptocurrency in mortgage risk assessments. The directive requires both firms to evaluate volatility risks and propose mitigation measures before board approval and FHFA review.
Other lenders, including Newrez, have already begun recognizing crypto holdings for mortgage applications. The move aligns with rising interest in Bitcoin-backed home financing amid historically high US housing prices, with the median new home price at $400,000 in 2026.
The agency’s guidance reflects growing regulatory scrutiny of digital assets in traditional financial products. No immediate market reaction was reported.
