Comcast will spin off NBCUniversal and Sky into a separate media entity, aiming to sharpen focus on broadband and entertainment sectors.

Comcast Corporation (CMCSA) shares surged over 6% after announcing a tax-free spinoff of NBCUniversal and Sky into two independent, publicly traded companies. The move will create a connectivity-focused Comcast and a standalone media business, reflecting divergent industry trends and strategic priorities.

The separation follows shifting consumer behavior and competitive pressures in broadband and media markets. Comcast stated the structure will enable better capital allocation and faster responses to industry-specific opportunities. The transaction is expected to close in 2025, pending regulatory approval.

Comcast co-CEO Mike Cavanagh will lead NBCUniversal, while former CFO Michael Angelakis will head the connectivity-focused Comcast. Current co-CEO Brian Roberts will oversee the transition for both entities.
