Google parent Alphabet’s 4% gain on Dow inclusion drove the index higher, offsetting broader market volatility and Verizon’s decline.

Alphabet’s debut on the Dow Jones Industrial Average added $168 billion to its market capitalization, a 4% gain that outpaced the index’s 0.4% rise. The move replaced Verizon, which fell 7% on the news, highlighting Alphabet’s dominance as its single-day gain exceeded Verizon’s total market value of $89 billion.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also advanced, up 0.7% and 1.3% respectively, recovering from earlier volatility. Amazon’s Prime Day sales, totaling $26.4 billion, contributed to its 4.7% rise, making it the second-largest driver of index gains behind Alphabet. Tesla added $66 billion in market cap amid collaboration reports.

Comcast’s 7% jump on spinoff plans had minimal impact due to its smaller $89 billion market cap. The broader market shrugged off mid-morning sell-offs, focusing on tech and retail strength.
