Washington advances crypto regulation with SEC rule proposals and Trump’s push for legislative clarity ahead of September session.
The SEC proposed new rules allowing crypto asset offerings up to $5 million over four years or $75 million annually without full registration. The proposal includes a conditional safe harbor for certain transactions, marking the agency’s first crypto-specific rulemaking effort.
President Donald Trump met with crypto executives at the White House, urging Congress to pass a “fair version” of the Clarity Act when lawmakers return in September. The bill, backed by Sens. Thom Tillis and Ruben Gallego, faces disputes over ethics provisions that Trump claims target him.
CFTC Chairman Mike Selig warned that if the Clarity Act stalls due to “Democratic obstruction,” the agency will use existing authorities to create its own crypto regulatory framework. The CFTC has already directed staff to explore rulemaking options.
