The 500MW project in Emilia-Romagna aims to add 1.2GWh of grid flexibility as Italy expands renewable energy integration.
Zelestra and EnBW signed a long-term tolling agreement for a 300MW share of a 500MW battery storage project in Italy. The facility, set to deliver four-hour storage, will provide over 1.2GWh of grid flexibility in Emilia-Romagna, a region with high industrial electricity demand and growing renewable generation.
Construction is slated to begin in 2027, with full operations expected by 2028. The project aligns with Italy’s push to enhance grid stability amid rising renewable energy adoption. Zelestra will build the system, while EnBW will offtake 300MW of capacity under the deal.
Zelestra confirmed the 2GWh project is now fully secured, positioning it as one of Europe’s largest battery storage initiatives. The company cited its experience in Spain, Germany, and Italy, alongside EnBW’s market expertise, as key drivers for the partnership.
