XDC Network is integrating the x402 open payment standard, allowing AI agents to settle transactions instantly using stablecoins. The protocol revives the HTTP 402 status code, enabling machines to pay for data or services autonomously without manual approval or API keys.
The standard addresses a critical gap in the “agentic economy,” where AI systems can recommend actions but lack the infrastructure for real-time settlement, compliance, and trust. Industry players, including crypto startups and card networks, are competing to provide solutions for programmable, instant payments.
XDC co-founder Atul Khekade highlighted the need for compliance, dispute resolution, and KYC/AML frameworks to support AI-driven transactions. The adoption of x402 could accelerate the shift from recommendation-based AI to action-oriented systems.
