Analyst skepticism weighs on Workday stock following initial surge on reported Silver Lake acquisition talks.

Workday (WDAY) shares fell in the two sessions after an initial 8% jump on reports private equity firm Silver Lake was in talks to acquire the software maker. The retreat reflects skepticism among analysts about the deal’s viability, despite renewed leadership under cofounder Aneel Bhusri, who returned as CEO in early 2026.

Prior to the reports, Workday stock had traded near $280 per share, with no recent buyout rumors in circulation. The company last saw significant M&A speculation in 2023, when activist investors pushed for strategic alternatives. Silver Lake’s interest, if confirmed, would mark its largest software acquisition to date.

No immediate market reaction was reported beyond the initial stock movement, as traders await further developments.
