Wendy’s stock jumps on retail-driven momentum and turnaround optimism following the appointment of a new CFO with a strong track record.

Wendy’s (NASDAQ:WEN) shares climbed 27% to $7.97 in Wednesday trading after naming Steve Cirulis as CFO and chief strategy officer. The move follows a coordinated retail effort on Reddit targeting a short squeeze in the heavily shorted stock, which hit 20-year lows near $6.26 on June 23.

Cirulis previously worked alongside Wendy’s CEO Bob Wright at Potbelly (PBPB), where he helped drive a 500% share gain. The hire comes as Wendy’s struggles with an 8% drop in Q1 2026 same-restaurant sales and a 42% decline in net income. Despite weak fundamentals, director Peter May recently purchased shares below current levels.

The rally reflects retail investor enthusiasm rather than fundamental improvements, as the stock remains under pressure from weak traffic and earnings declines.
