New geological survey reveals Appalachian region holds enough lithium to meet U.S. battery demand for centuries.

The United States Geological Survey identified lithium deposits in the Appalachian region sufficient to supply U.S. battery production for over 300 years. The discovery could reduce reliance on foreign lithium sources amid rising demand for electric vehicles and energy storage.

Lithium, dubbed ‘white gold,’ is critical for lithium-ion batteries powering clean energy technologies. Current U.S. lithium production meets only a fraction of domestic needs, with most supply sourced from Australia, Chile, and China.

The findings may accelerate domestic mining projects and strengthen U.S. supply chain independence for critical minerals.
