The U.S. Department of Transportation has secured a contract with FreightWaves SONAR to access high-frequency freight market data. The agreement aims to bolster federal analysis of transportation networks, regulatory enforcement, and supply chain resilience by integrating real-time freight activity insights across truckload, intermodal, ocean, and air cargo sectors.
USDOT’s Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology will utilize SONAR’s aggregated and anonymized datasets to monitor freight market health and dynamics. The move aligns with the department’s priority to strengthen oversight of national transportation and supply chain networks, particularly in safety and security.
The data will provide immediate visibility into freight movements, supporting economic research and policy decisions. Deputy Assistant Secretary Lee White emphasized the need for robust, current data sources to modernize the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
