The United States has imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian exports, covering approximately 5% of Canada’s total shipments to its southern neighbor. The measures target sectors including plastics, electrical machinery, and wood products, with disproportionate effects on Quebec, British Columbia, and Ontario.

While the tariffs are not expected to derail Canada’s economic growth, they introduce new trade uncertainties and could prompt supply chain adjustments within North America. RBC notes that the high tariff rate may make Canadian goods prohibitively expensive, potentially rerouting trade flows to avoid costs.

The Bank of Canada is unlikely to adjust interest rates in response, as the macroeconomic impact remains limited. However, the tariffs signal a re-escalation of trade tensions under the CUSMA framework.
