US and China have different trade priorities for Asia
The US and China are sending different messages about their priorities for Asia, just over a week after the two presidents met in Beijing. China’s economy relies significantly on exports, accounting for about 28% of the goods made globally.
China’s Commerce Minister noted the importance of a free trade agreement, while the US focused on balanced trade. The US views the Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific as an agenda rather than a destination.
The differing views on trade may impact the ongoing negotiations between the two countries. The US and China have been working to resolve their trade differences, but a resolution has yet to be reached.
