The US and Canada have postponed the opening of the $4.7 billion Gordie Howe International Bridge, a critical trade artery between Detroit and Windsor, following objections from the Trump administration. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the delay, citing unresolved issues raised by US officials, though the setback is expected to last only weeks rather than months.

Originally scheduled to open this week, the bridge aims to alleviate congestion on the busiest US-Canada freight corridor, where existing bottlenecks have increased costs for logistics operators. The project has faced political hurdles, including Trump’s February criticism of Canadian alcohol regulations, dairy tariffs, and China trade policies as reasons to block the bridge.

Talks are led by US Commerce Secretary Lutnick and Ambassador Pete Hoekstra, while rival Ambassador Bridge owner Matthew Moroun, who donated $1 million to a Trump-aligned PAC, has also engaged in discussions. The delay underscores persistent trade friction despite the USMCA agreement.
