HMRC reports 436,000 sole traders and landlords filed first quarterly digital tax updates under new £50,000 income threshold rules.
More than 436,000 UK sole traders and landlords submitted their first quarterly tax updates under the Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax scheme. The filings cover the initial three months of the 2026-2027 tax year, with 570,000 now registered for the service.
The mandate applies to those with qualifying income above £50,000, with the threshold set to lower to £30,000 next April. HMRC noted no penalties for late filings this year but will begin staged enrollment for non-compliant taxpayers in September.
HMRC described the transition as smooth, citing positive feedback on digital filing software. New guidance for taxpayers will be released in late August.
