Eli Lilly’s GLP-1 tablet orforglipron secures U.K. regulatory clearance for obesity and type 2 diabetes treatment.
The U.K.’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency approved Eli Lilly’s orforglipron (Foundayo), a once-daily GLP-1 tablet for weight management and type 2 diabetes. This marks the first European approval for the oral treatment, positioning the U.K. as the initial market for the drug outside clinical trials.
Orforglipron joins a growing class of GLP-1 therapies, which have gained traction for their dual benefits in diabetes and obesity. Eli Lilly’s injectable tirzepatide (Zepbound) already competes with Novo Nordisk’s semaglutide (Wegovy) in the U.S. and Europe, but orforglipron offers a non-injectable alternative.
No immediate market reaction was disclosed following the regulatory decision. Eli Lilly’s shares have risen over 60% year-to-date amid strong demand for its metabolic disease portfolio.
