A Goldman Sachs retirement survey found 67% of working Americans say excessive monthly expenses are preventing them from saving for retirement. Key costs, including housing, childcare, and education, have surged as a share of income over the past two decades.

Housing expenses rose from 21% of income in 2000 to 36% in 2025, while childcare costs jumped from 10% to 25% and private college tuition from 9% to 33%. These increases have outpaced wage growth, particularly affecting Millennials and Gen Z, with over 75% delaying major life milestones.

The survey highlights a “Financial Vortex” where competing financial obligations, such as healthcare and student loans, further strain household budgets. Projections indicate these pressures will persist through 2035.
