The world’s largest chipmaker increases U.S. capital commitment as AI-driven demand drives multi-year capacity expansion.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. will inject an additional $100 billion into its Arizona operations, lifting total planned investment to $265 billion. The move responds to what the company calls a structural, multi-year surge in demand for AI semiconductors.
TSMC also raised its 2024 capital expenditure guidance to a range of $60 billion to $64 billion, up from prior forecasts. The first Arizona fabrication plant is operational with yields matching its Taiwan flagship, while a second fab nears equipment installation and a third is under construction.
Expansion plans now include 12 fabrication and advanced packaging facilities alongside a dedicated R&D center, though physical constraints such as labor shortages and infrastructure limits remain challenges.
