Tesla stock climbed 4% to $357.91 in Friday trading following the company’s Europe Semi launch event and approval for robotaxi operations in Las Vegas. The gains partially recover a 23% year-to-date decline through Thursday’s close, driven by investor optimism around autonomy advancements despite broader market headwinds.

The rally contrasts with Tesla’s recent challenges, including a 32% year-over-year drop in July China sales and a 2.98 million-vehicle recall tied to 15 fatalities. Competitors like Uber and Alphabet’s Waymo also benefited from the Nevada permits, with Uber up 2% to $79.79 and Alphabet rising 0.3% to $343.07, though the impact remains sector-specific rather than thematic.

The move highlights Tesla’s ability to generate momentum from forward-looking projects, even as near-term operational pressures persist. The autonomy-focused rally has yet to broaden beyond select players, with DRIV up just 1% against Tesla’s outsized gain.
