Tether International has finalized its acquisition of SoftBank’s entire stake in Twenty One Capital (XXI), gaining full control of the Bitcoin-focused firm. The deal, announced May 20, 2026, removes SoftBank’s board representation and solidifies Tether’s majority ownership of XXI’s 43,500 BTC treasury, valued at roughly $4 billion at launch.

XXI debuted in December 2025 via a SPAC merger, initially holding over 43,500 BTC. SoftBank’s minority stake, equivalent to about 10,500 BTC, provided institutional credibility during XXI’s early development. Tether and Bitfinex were the primary backers, with SoftBank’s involvement shaping strategy and attracting institutional interest.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated the buyout reflects deeper confidence in XXI’s future. The move follows Tether’s proposal to merge XXI with Strike and Elektron Energy, aiming to create an integrated Bitcoin ecosystem spanning treasury management, mining, and lending.
