Taiwan’s energy security is under strain after LNG imports from the Gulf region ceased in April and May. The island relies on imports for 99% of its natural gas, with one-third of its 23.6 million tonnes (Mt) in 2025 sourced from Qatar (8 Mt) and the UAE (200,000 t).

The Strait of Hormuz blockade has trapped loaded LNG tankers, disrupting supplies. Gas-fired plants, critical to Taiwan’s power grid, now face potential shortages as alternative sources remain unsecured.

No immediate market reaction was reported, but prolonged disruptions could pressure energy prices and industrial output.
