Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, an AI model routing marketplace, for more than $8 billion in cash and stock. The deal positions OpenRouter as a key infrastructure layer for AI developers, offering access to over 400 models via a single API with per-token pricing and automatic failover.
OpenRouter, which raised $164 million at a $1.3 billion valuation in May, processes tens of trillions of tokens weekly and serves 8-10 million developers. The acquisition price represents a more than fivefold increase in valuation in just three months. OpenRouter has used Stripe’s payment tools since January, integrating billing, fraud detection, and global payments.
The deal underscores Stripe’s push into AI infrastructure, complementing its stablecoin blockchain Tempo and the Machine Payments Protocol, which enables autonomous AI agent transactions.
