China aims to increase shale gas output by a third by 2030 to bolster energy security amid current production shortfalls.
Sinopec is accelerating exploration in the Sichuan basin to boost China’s shale gas production by 33% over the next decade. The effort targets an output of 80 to 100 billion cubic meters by 2030, addressing a gap in government goals.
Currently, shale gas accounts for just 10% of China’s total natural gas production, falling short of official targets. State-owned firms are under pressure to close the deficit as demand for cleaner energy sources rises.
The push aligns with Beijing’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on imported energy and enhance domestic supply security.
