The US Securities and Exchange Commission will hold a public roundtable on September 17 to explore the shift toward 24-hour stock trading in US equity markets. The event follows moves by Nasdaq, Cboe, and the London Stock Exchange to extend trading hours, aligning with global markets that already operate continuously.

Exchanges are preparing for overnight trading, with Nasdaq targeting a late 2026 launch pending regulatory approval. The London Stock Exchange plans a night-time venue by early 2027. The SEC’s discussions will focus on market resiliency and operational readiness for round-the-clock trading.

The push for extended hours aims to provide retail investors with access similar to cryptocurrency markets, which already offer 24/7 trading. SEC Chair Paul Atkins highlighted the potential for US markets to adapt to continuous trading models.
