Chinese automaker SAIC Motor will construct its first European Union electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Spain’s Galicia region, with an initial investment of 200 million euros ($232 million). The facility, set to begin construction in 2027, aims to become operational by the end of 2028 and will have an annual production capacity of 120,000 vehicles upon completion of a second phase.

The project includes a logistics and assembly hub near Ferrol port and is expected to generate over 2,300 local jobs, including 1,000 direct positions. SAIC plans to source a significant portion of components locally. Central government approval for foreign direct investment is still pending.

SAIC, owner of the MG brand, has gained traction in European markets, while rival Chinese automaker Chery is also expanding in Spain through a joint venture targeting 150,000 vehicles annually by 2029.
