Saia’s tonnage growth rose 8.4% year-over-year in May
Saia reported an 8.4% year-over-year increase in tonnage growth for May, driven by a 3.7% rise in shipments and a 4.5% increase in weight per shipment.
The improvement was measured against a softer prior-year result, with April’s tonnage growth at 6.9% and shipments and weight per shipment up 5.6% and 1.3%, respectively.
The company’s two-year-stacked comps show tonnage growth slowing from 15% in March to 8% in May, but higher shipment weights are a sign of an improving LTL market, typically driving revenue per shipment and margins higher.
