Indonesian Rupiah strengthens to near two-month highs after Bank Indonesia names sole governor candidate and US payrolls disappoint.

The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) climbed to its strongest level in nearly two months, trading near 17,680 against the US Dollar (USD), as clarity over Bank Indonesia’s leadership and softer USD demand provided support. Weak US payroll data on Friday further bolstered the IDR, reducing expectations of aggressive Federal Reserve tightening.

Markets reacted positively to President Prabowo’s nomination of Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate to lead Bank Indonesia, removing near-term uncertainty following Perry Warjiyo’s departure. Analysts noted her emphasis on currency stability and extensive central bank experience as key factors driving confidence. Support levels are seen at 17,680–17,580, with resistance around 17,840–17,970.

Upcoming risks include US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data, oil price movements, and the next Bank Indonesia meeting on August 19. A softer USD backdrop and policy continuity are expected to keep the IDR supported in the near term.
