New Zealand’s 1-year inflation expectations for Q3 2026 dropped to 2.6% from 3.4% in Q2, while 2-year expectations eased to 2.3% from 2.5%. The decline suggests waning price pressures, prompting markets to scale back bets on a Reserve Bank of New Zealand rate hike on September 2.

Prior surveys had signaled persistent inflation concerns, keeping rate hike expectations elevated. The latest data contrasts with earlier prints, where expectations remained above the RBNZ’s target range, reinforcing a more cautious monetary policy outlook.

The New Zealand dollar extended losses following the release, reflecting reduced tightening expectations. Traders are now pricing in a lower probability of further rate increases this year.
