China’s central bank sets the yuan midpoint below expectations, signaling potential currency stabilization efforts amid slower credit growth.

The People’s Bank of China set the USD/CNY mid-point at 6.8096, weaker than the 6.7569 estimate. The move follows signals from PBOC Governor Pan Gongsheng indicating slower credit growth and a push for offshore foreign exchange activity.

Analysts had anticipated a stronger yuan fix, reflecting recent market trends. The decision comes as China prepares to issue CNY 300 billion in bonds to bolster bank capital and address local debt risks, adding to monetary policy adjustments.

The yuan’s weaker-than-expected fix may influence regional FX markets, particularly as Japan and Singapore report stronger export data driven by semiconductor and AI demand.
