OPEC lowered its 2026 oil demand growth forecast by 200,000 barrels per day to 800,000 bpd, citing ongoing geopolitical disruptions and softer consumption trends. The adjustment marks the second consecutive monthly cut for the year, reflecting weaker-than-expected demand in key markets.

The group had previously revised its 2026 outlook in June, following initial reductions earlier in the year. Despite the downward adjustment, OPEC raised its 2027 demand growth projection, signaling cautious optimism for a longer-term recovery. Analysts note that higher oil prices may be prompting buyers to seek alternatives or reduce usage.

Energy stocks, including ExxonMobil (XOM), could see near-term benefits from elevated prices, with estimates suggesting a potential $5 billion boost to second-quarter earnings. However, sustained demand weakness may offset gains over time.
