Nissan Motor and Honda Motor will collaborate on a new software operating system and electronic hardware for next-generation vehicles. The move aims to lower development and production costs as software and electronics now account for a larger share of vehicle expenses due to advanced driver assistance and autonomous driving features.

The companies, which abandoned merger talks in early 2025, will base the OS on Nissan’s existing platform and share electronic control units. A formal agreement is expected next month, following progress in joint development discussions.

The partnership reflects broader industry shifts toward software-defined vehicles, where AI, connectivity, and autonomous technologies drive up costs. Standardization is seen as a way to remain competitive against global rivals.
