NextEra Energy increased its large-load demand forecast for Florida Power & Light to 8 gigawatts by 2032, up from 6 gigawatts, citing surging demand from hyperscale data centers and industrial customers. The revision reflects an unprecedented need for reliable electricity to power AI-driven facilities, which can require over a gigawatt of capacity each.

The company now reports 21 gigawatts of large-load interest at FPL, with 12 gigawatts in advanced discussions. Projects could begin service as early as 2028, and NextEra expects to announce at least one major agreement this year. Management estimates each gigawatt of new demand will drive roughly $2 billion in infrastructure investment.

Utilities capable of delivering power quickly and competitively are becoming strategic partners for data center operators. NextEra positions itself as a key beneficiary of this trend, leveraging its regulated infrastructure to meet growing demand.
