Micron’s HBM3E chips consume triple the silicon of standard memory, creating a supply crunch as AI demand outpaces production.
Micron Technology’s stock rose nearly 700% over 12 months as AI-driven demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) outstripped supply. The company’s HBM3E chips require three times more silicon than standard DRAM, limiting output for other applications.
Management revealed in March 2025 that Micron was sold out of HBM for all of 2025 and already discussing 2026 demand with customers. This signaled a shift from market balance to a structural shortage, accelerating the stock’s rally.
The supply constraints underscored Micron’s leadership in HBM, a critical component for AI accelerators. The company’s production math, previously overlooked, became a key driver of its historic surge.
