Mexico’s economy minister said the country aims to address US concerns over foreign independence under the USMCA, proposing reductions to Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs. Talks will focus on coordinating regional trade rules, though disagreements persist on auto parts and agricultural seasonality criteria.

The minister acknowledged systemic differences, particularly in auto sector rules of origin, which are among the most complex globally. Section 232 tariffs, predating USMCA, remain a key point of contention despite the trade agreement’s regional partnerships.

Canada’s involvement in upcoming negotiations remains uncertain, with unresolved issues likely to dominate discussions in the coming weeks.
