Meta Platforms will invest $9 billion to construct a one-gigawatt AI data center in Sturgeon County, Alberta, its first in Canada. The project, set to take three years, will be the company’s 33rd data center and aims to meet rising demand for AI infrastructure.

The move follows Meta’s forecast of up to $145 billion in capital expenditures for AI this year. It also underscores the company’s push to rival Alphabet and Microsoft in cloud computing, a sector where Amazon currently leads. Alberta’s energy resources and regulatory environment attracted the investment.

At peak construction, the facility is expected to create over 3,000 jobs and involve local partnerships with energy firms. Meta’s expansion comes as it seeks to close the gap with AI leaders like Anthropic and Google.
