April data shows real wages rising 1.9% y/y, the fastest pace since 2024, strengthening the case for Bank of Japan tightening.

Japan’s real wages climbed 1.9% year-on-year in April, exceeding the 1.7% forecast, as nominal wages surged 3.5%, the fastest growth since December 2024. The data marks the first three-month streak above 3% in over 34 years, signaling sustained labor market strength.

Household spending fell 0.5% y/y, an improvement from March’s 2.9% decline and better than the 1.5% drop expected. The resilience in wages and spending bolsters expectations for a Bank of Japan policy shift, with futures pricing a 96% chance of a June rate hike.

The April figures follow a revised 3.1% nominal wage increase in March, reinforcing the trend of rising incomes amid tight labor conditions. Analysts note the data supports the central bank’s move toward policy normalization after years of ultra-loose monetary settings.
