The Bank of Japan’s quarterly survey shows large manufacturers’ confidence surged to 22, exceeding the 16 forecast by economists.
Japan’s Tankan Large Manufacturing Index rose to 22 in the second quarter, up from 17 in the prior period and above the 16 expected by analysts. The gauge, a key indicator of business sentiment, reflects stronger-than-anticipated optimism among large manufacturers amid improving economic conditions.
The index had previously stood at 17 in Q1, with market consensus projecting a modest increase to 16 for Q2. The latest reading marks the highest level since Q4 2022, signaling a rebound in manufacturing confidence after a period of weaker prints.
The data suggests potential upside for Japan’s industrial sector, though broader economic implications remain under scrutiny as policymakers assess growth prospects.
