India’s power demand hits 271 GW amid hot weather
India’s power generation has reached a new all-time high due to increased air-conditioning demand driven by hot weather. Thermal generation, mostly from coal power plants, covered 62% of demand.
Power demand has been beating peak levels after a period of tempered growth. The country’s power ministry noted that Thursday marked the fourth consecutive day of record-high peak power demand during solar hours.
The surge in power demand comes after a fiscal year that saw the lowest demand growth in six years due to milder temperatures.
