Gasoline sales rose 7.4% annually despite overall fuel consumption decline, driven partly by increased exports to Russia.
India’s fuel consumption fell 3.1% year-over-year in June to 19.24 million metric tons, marking a second consecutive monthly decline. The drop contrasts with record crude oil imports, as demand softened across most fuel categories.
May’s consumption had already slipped 3.7% month-over-month, while gasoline sales bucked the trend, rising 7.4% annually. Diesel and other fuels saw declines, offsetting gains in gasoline, which analysts linked to higher exports to Russia amid geopolitical disruptions.
The data highlights weakening domestic demand despite robust crude imports, signaling potential economic headwinds for the energy sector.
