India inaugurated an $8.3 billion refinery in Rajasthan, adding 180,000 barrels per day of processing capacity. The plant, the only new global refinery expected this year, underscores India’s push to expand refining as Western nations retire aging facilities.
The Barmer refinery includes 2.4 million tons of annual petrochemical capacity and strengthens India’s role as a diesel and gasoline exporter. India is projected to account for nearly a quarter of global refining additions by 2030, shifting export geography toward Asia.
Despite reliance on imported crude, the facility enhances India’s ability to process diverse crude grades and sustain fuel exports amid supply risks like Hormuz disruptions.
