Legislation establishes rules for cash purchases without pennies
The House of Representatives has passed the Common Cents Act, which aims to create nationwide rules for handling cash purchases as the US phases out the one-cent coin.
The bill comes after the US Mint produced its final penny in late 2025, with production costs nearing four cents per coin.
Inconsistent rounding practices could cost restaurants up to $168 million a year, but a federal standard would provide businesses with certainty as pennies become scarce.
