Global Ship Lease secures long-term charters for 15 newbuild vessels, leveraging $1.3 billion in investments as geopolitical tensions boost demand.

Global Ship Lease (NYSE:GSL) announced a $1.3 billion fleet-renewal program, ordering 15 new mid-size containerships backed by multi-year charters. The company cited geopolitical disruptions, including instability in the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea, as key drivers of increased vessel demand.

The newbuilds, described as highly specified for a structurally underbuilt segment, have an average charter term of 7.1 years. Over $1 billion of the contract price is expected to be covered by adjusted EBITDA from the firm charters, according to executives.

Executives highlighted that mid-size and smaller container ships, like those in GSL’s fleet, are benefiting from liner companies’ preference for flexible capacity amid trade route uncertainties.
