July ZEW survey shows a stronger-than-expected improvement in economic outlook, though current conditions remain weak amid geopolitical tensions.
Germany’s ZEW economic sentiment index climbed to 26.3 in July, exceeding the 17.5 forecast and marking a sharp rise from June’s 10.5. The current conditions index edged up to -77.6, slightly better than the -77.8 estimate but still near historic lows.
The prior month’s current conditions stood at -81.0, while the outlook index had reached 10.5. Analysts had anticipated a modest rebound, but the jump in sentiment suggests growing optimism about reforms and export-driven growth, despite lingering uncertainty.
ZEW noted that domestic demand and export sectors showed sustained improvement, though escalating Middle East tensions and oil price volatility remain key risks. Markets are watching for further signals from the ECB on inflation and growth prospects ahead of Q4 2026.
