May’s 1.9% increase in German manufacturing orders suggests a gradual industrial rebound after prolonged stagnation and a weak Q2.
German manufacturing orders climbed 1.9% in May from April, exceeding economist expectations of just over 1%. Excluding volatile large orders, the increase was 1.0%, reinforcing signs of a modest upturn in industrial activity.
The rise follows a period of stagnation and a likely small contraction in Germany’s economy during the second quarter. Economists had anticipated a more muted gain, highlighting the surprise strength in the latest data.
The figures support expectations for a moderate recovery in German industry, though analysts caution against expecting a strong rebound. Growth forecasts for 2026 remain unchanged at 0.6%.
