GameStop’s high-priced Pokémon card packs offer rare cards valued up to $68,000, drawing investor interest despite steep markups.
GameStop is capitalizing on Pokémon card demand by selling presorted packs for up to $5,000 each, a near 100,000% markup over retail prices. The packs include rare cards like a 1999 Charizard-Holo, valued at $68,000, and a 2006 Mewtwo-Holo worth $61,000.
The retailer previously capped pack prices at $2,500 but introduced the $5,000 tier after its rejected eBay takeover bid. Buyers can resell cards back to GameStop at 90% of market value, minus a 6% fee, or seek higher returns elsewhere.
While the strategy targets collectors, it underscores GameStop’s push into alternative revenue streams amid its meme-stock legacy. The move follows mixed investor reactions to its pivot beyond gaming retail.
